Trayvon Martin shooting stirs reaction in Congress, demands for federal investigation

March

The shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Florida has led to calls from members of Congress for a Justice Department investigation.

Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Jacksonville, first made the call and now it's been echoed by the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez, D-Texas.

"Our children of color need and deserve equal protection under the law," Gonzalez said in a statement. "With a thorough and competent examination, we will never know fully what transpired that tragic night. Failing to investigate an incident with so many uncertainties is a disservice to the residents of Sanford and an affront to the core concepts of civil rights."

Brown wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder that said, "Given the history of racial tension in the Sanford community, I believe it would be wise for the Department of Justice to become involved and I request an emergency meeting with you or a senior DOJ official on Tuesday, March 20th."
