Turanchik hopes Obama visit means rail money for Florida

Ed Turanchik, president of rail advocacy group Connect Us, said he is not sure if President Barack Obama will be making an announcement about high-speed rail money when he visits the bay area next week, but he's hopeful.

"The president and the vice president coming to the city right after the state of the Union is huge," he said. "I can only imagine they are making a major announcement."

The White House announced Thursday that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will travel to the bay area Jan. 28, a day after the State of the Union, but gave no details.

Turanchik said Florida is in a strong position to win federal funding after the Legislature passed commuter rail legislation in a December special session. Also, the decision on funding high-speed rail is supposed to come from the transportation administration soon.

"We're full of expectation and anticipation and we're hopeful," he said,
