Updated: Fasano says he'll file anti-corruption bills

State Sen. Mike Fasano, a Republican from New Port Richey, says he'll file legislation in the coming months taking into account recommendations a grand jury report on public corruption . Among the changes he'd like to make: Require the Cabinet including the Governor to put their assets into a blind trust; authorize the Ethics Commission to initiate investigations; strengthen the bid tampering rules; and expand the definition of public employees to include private contractors.

In its 127-page report, the panel expressed concerns about state workers stealing televisions, private prison guards taking bribes and legislators voting on issues that could benefit them financially. Republican Sen. Paula Dockery from Lakeland has already filed a bill that would force lawmakers to abstain from those votes. The grand jury noted that the state, requires city council members and county commissioners to abstain from such votes. Why the double standard? State lawmakers say they vote on so many things it's hard to know which bills will impact them personnally. The grand jury says that's no excuse. Read more about it here.
