U.S. Attorney Aronberg or Gelber?

Here's one solution to the Democrats' dilemma in having three strong candidates vying for attorney general: Dan Gelber or Dave Aronberg becoming U.S. attorney for the Southern District in Florida. We're not saying this is likely by any means, but it is being discussed at high levels of the party.

Friday is the deadline for applicants to the federal JNC, which will send three names to Sens. Mel Martinez and Bill Nelson, who in turn will send recommendations to the White House. Gelber, a former assistant U.S. attorney, clearly would be more qualified for the post than Aronberg (which arguably makes him more qualified for attorney general, too).

Another factor: After all the controversy about the Bush administration politicizing U.S. attorney operations, the White House presumably would be very skittish about the perception of playing politics in the Southern District.
