U.S. Senate hearing into Florida election law set for Jan. 27

A U.S. Senate panel will hold a hearing in Tampa on Jan. 27 to look at Florida's new election laws, according to Sen. Bill Nelson's office.

The hearing -- only days before the state's presidential primary -- will be held by the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Rights, which is chaired by Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois. Nelson requested the hearing after joining in criticism of the election provisions, which shorten early voting and make other changes Democrats say will suppress turnout.
