USF officials to meet Monday with senators

University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft will meet Monday with Sen. JD Alexander, the influential budget chairman behind the cuts that she has called “draconian.”

Genshaft, speaking to reporters in Tampa Thursday, said her request will be to restore enough funding so that USF’s cuts are in line with those proposed at other universities.

Genshaft would not describe her conversations with other university presidents but said she knew they supported her quest. “I know the other presidents are very concerned,” she said.

Alexander has made known priority to turn USF's Lakeland campus into the 12th state university, and has said USF has dragged its feet on that split.  University officials have called the cuts “political” and one Democratic lawmaker called them “vindictive.”
Asked whether she believes Alexander had even assumed the budget cuts to USF had a chance of passing, particularly over the objections of a powerful Tampa Bay delegation, Genshaft demurred.
“I don’t participate in ... Tallahassee insider politics,” Genshaft said. “I can only react to what I know and what I see on paper.”
