Varn loses appeal as Vasilinda prevails
A three-judge panel of the First District Court of Appeal on Friday denied Democrat Fred Varn's appeal of a circuit court order striking his name from the Aug. 26 primary ballot as a House candidate in a Tallahassee district. Read the brief order here.
In a case brought by Varn's opponent, Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda, the appeals court agreed with a lower court concluded that Varn, a former Leon County School Board member, violated Florida's resign-to-run law. Vasilinda's decision to use the legal system to keep her opponent off the ballot has been debated intensely in capital political circles, but so far it's been successful. The Democratic nominee will face Republican Peter Boulware in November for the seat now held by the term-limited Democrat Loranne Ausley.
