Veep-O-Meter retires with Crist's prospects
It's time to retire our Crist Veep-O-Meter, since the prospects of John McCain tapping our governor as his running mate look so dim. He already seemed like a long shot, and then this week McCain faced some lousy national publicity and had to return $50,000 of suspicious campaign donations funneled through Charlie Crist's pal and top fundraiser, Harry Sargeant III of Boca Raton. More here.
Still, we give props to Crist for sticking to McCain's talking points effectively on energy policy. He was on CNN today with Wolf Blitzer: "Let's look at the record,'' said Crist. "I know Senator Obama has not been in the United States Senate for that long, but he's been there long enough to vote. Long enough to vote in 2005. "And the irony here is that Senator Obama voted for the Bush/Cheney energy policy that gave billions of dollars in subsidies to big oil. Now, here his attacking Senator McCain? It was Senator John McCain, the maverick, the independent, he's his own guy, goes down to the floor of the U.S. Senate and on that same 2005 Bush/Cheney energy bill voted against it. John McCain puts country first. He understands the most important thing we need to do is to protect Americans, fight for them. We don't need to be subsidizing big oil. We need to be fighting for the American people. John McCain has a right, Senator Obama just doesn't understand it and that's a shame."
