Vern Buchanan lands key Ways and Means committee seat
Congressman Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, got his wish: A spot on the powerful Ways and Means committee. The assignment likely ends any chance Buchanan will run against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012, a relief to other would-be challengers who lack Buchanan's personal wealth.
"I will work on the committee to advance a pro-growth, pro-jobs agenda that will help put people back to work," Buchanan said. "That includes keeping taxes low, reducing overly burdensome regulations and controlling spending to reduce the deficit."
Also Thursday, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Miami, landed a seat on the appropriations committee.
