Victory in GOP primary first step to Rep. Bilirakis II
Winning about 80 percent of votes, Gus Bilirakis secured a resounding defeat over David Langheier in the Republican primary for the District 9 Congressional seat. (as of 11:45 p.m., 36 percent of Hillsborough precincts had not yet been tallied). “I’m energized,” Bilirakis said Tuesday night, from a celebration at an Oldsmar restaurant. “We’ve been working hard for the past year and a half. But we’re going to have a big one in November.” Turn out on Tuesday was dismal, even compared to the 2004 primary when Mike Bilirakis won 84 percent of the vote against Joseph Stanley. Gus Bilirakis has two months and more than a million dollars for the face off against Democrat Phyllis Busansky of Tampa and Andrew Pasayan, an independent from Holiday, a race that is expected to be decidedly more competitive.
