Vote and sign ballot initiative for next go round?

The group Fair Districts Florida is asking its supporters to hit the polls on election day and take advantage of the record numbers of civic-minded voters to gather signatures for their ballot initiative aimed to change the way Congressional and legislative district map lines are drawn.

The initiative tends to be favored by Democrats, although Democrats also took advantage of redrawing district lines to suit their incumbents for many years.

The ballot initiative language says that both Congressional and Legislative districts "may not be drawn to favor or disfavor an incumbent or political party. Districts shall not be drawn to deny racial or language minorities the equal opportunity to participate in the political process and elect representatives of their choice. Districts must be contiguous. Unless otherwise required, districts must be compact, as equal in population as feasible, and where feasible must make use of existing city, county and geographical boundaries."
