When Crist Says 'Stay the Course'

Charlie Crist's campaign for governor requires some parsing of words. On the one hand, he wants to extend Jeb Bush's legacy, especially on education. On the other hand, he wants to be seen as a different kind of leader to avoid being cast as a more-of-the-same candidate.

Democrat Jim Davis is trying to box in Crist as an agent of the status quo, noting that Crist has promised to "stay the course." Crist told The Buzz over the weekend he didn't recall using the "S.T.C." phrase, but he has, most recently on Sept. 1, right before the primary, in a speech in Kissimmee to the Florida Medical Association.

"It's fantastic what's happening in Florida," Crist told the roomful of doctors at the Gaylord Palms Resort. "We've got to continue to have Florida flourish. That's why this election is so important. That's why we've got to stay this course, and continue to move forward in this state, and make sure we continue to have good, sound fiscal leadership that appreciates the fact that you work awfully hard for your money."
