Why Gelber, Meek, Iorio(?) best fear Ron Klein
Because potential Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Ron Klein as of Dec. 31 had $1.58-million on hand in his congressional campaign account that he can roll right into a senate campaign. Hotline compiled some other cash on hand numbers from candidates or potential candidates for Mel Martinez's senate seat: Kendrick Meek, $429,000; Vern Buchanan, $99,000; Connie Mack, $501,000.
Buchanan, of course, could write himself a ginormous check to dwarf the other candidates' campaign accounts.
And speaking of loaded candidates, Buzz chased a tip from a usually reliable source that Jeff Greene, a Democrat who divides his time between Miami Beach and Beverly Hills, was toying with running as a Democrat for the senate seat. Having made hundreds of millions of dollars shorting the subprime mortgage market (and being buddies with Mike Tyson), he sure could make things interesting. Sigh. It's not to be.
"I'm not running for anything,'' Greene told Buzz, calling the rumor of a senate bid "crazy," but noting he's thrilled to see Obama in the White House and wants to see as many Democrats as possible get elected.
