Will Pres. Bush spark a policy debate or flood of cash in District 9 race?
President Bush's upcoming visit is likely to inject another half million dollars into Gus Bilirakis' already bountiful campaign reserves, further raising the cash bar for Phyllis Busansky, his Democratic opponent. Busansky said she is flattered her candidacy has been deemed worthy of so much Republican fundraising muscle, but wants to engage on issues. The two canidates and (independent Andrew Pasayan) were asked to participate in a debate moderated by League of Women Voters next week, but Bilirakis' staff said that due to a scheduling conflict, he will not make it.
Busansky plans to use joint appearance with Kathy Castor and Fmr. Sen. Bob Graham this week to spark a debate about homeland security and the 9/11 Commission recommendations. Graham is then scheduled to headline a fundraiser for Busansky. The District 9 race began as a uphill battle for the Democratic and her DCCC backers, but will all this money put it out of reach?
