Will retired lawmakers be sporting these plates?

Retired lawmakers could soon be sporting newly-available license plates thanks to a bill that passed this session.

HB 1223 creates new specialty tags for retired Florida legislators and members of Congress at a cost of $500. About $450 will go toward preserving the Old Capitol building and $50 will go to the DMV.

What will these badges of legislative leadership look like?

The graphics department at the Florida House is on it. Click below to look at the mock-ups submitted to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles on Feb. 29, the day the bill passed the House. Former lawmakers can only get the plates if in office at least four years.

The plates' designs are pending approval from the DMV. Spokesperson Courtney Heidelberg said the agency will primarily consider legibility when deciding whether to accept the proposed tags.
