Winner and loser of the week
Winner Nancy Detert, R-Venice: In the toughest state Senate primary of '08, Detert now has the second highest ranking senator, Lisa Carlton, R-Osprey, leaning on lobbyists to help Detert succeed her in the Sarasota-area district.
Senate District 23 rival Republican Michael Grant of Port Charlotte (who backs Bradenton Republican Mike Bennett for Senate president in 2010) has Gov. Charlie Crist and U.S. Rep. Connie Mack in his corner, while Detert (who backs Sen. Mike Haridopolos for Senate president) has Senate President Ken Pruitt and Rep. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton.
Loser Don Saxon: The current financial regulation commissioner might want to dust off his resume, with CFO Alex Sink and the AARP calling for his scalp in the wake of a Miami Herald investigation into the shady background of many mortgage brokers in Florida. (more from the print Buzz)
