Winner and loser of the week in Fla politics
Winner(s) of the week: Bill McCollum and Bill Nelson. The Republican
gubernatorial candidate and Democratic senator never stopped warning about the threat to Florida’s beaches and economy from expanded offshore drilling, even when the polls suggested “Drill here, drill now” was the easy political call. Now an environmental catastrophe is drifting toward Florida shores, and they are among the few leaders not having to suddenly finesse, nuance, or revamp their position (see Crist, Charlie and Rubio, Marco).
Loser(s) of the week: Florida consumers. Two Charlie Crist appointees to the Public Service Commission vote against huge rate increases for FPL and Progress Energy in a recession and what happens? The Florida senate votes to reject their confirmations, questioning their experience and diversity. Kendrick Meek. He had expected to coast into the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination, but at the last minute drew an unpredictale billonaire primary challenger - investor Jeff Greene - and a governor bent on peeling away Democratic donors and voters.
