Winner and loser of the week in Fla politics

Winner of the week: U.S. Rep. John Mica. The Chairman of the House Transportation Committee for years has been pushing for themica.jpg expensive Orlando-area Sunrail commuter rail project. Despite widespread criticism that it’s a boondoggle, Gov. Rick Scott signed off on it Friday.

teaparty.jpgLoser of the week: Florida Tea Partiers. That  tea party governor you counted on to stand firm on his principles and fiscal conservatism? Sorry guys, but Gov. Outsider looks a lot more like another typical politician after approving the Sunrail project many tea party activists denounced.

The Florida Alliance, a coalition of tea party groups, released a statement Sunday criticizing the move:

"...We will not give a pass to the Governor on this, nor will we overlook the myriad of politicians who told us privately that SUNRAIL is a boondoggle but wouldn't stand up for Floridians by coming out publicly for fear of standing up to corporate interests and political elites.  Again- shame on you- we will remember your names.

"Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Prasad met with all the municipalities involved and offered the explanation that the state’s participation is contingent on local government commitments. We expect the Governor will ensure these local commitments are met so that costs are not passed off to state taxpayers, but we shall keep a sharp eye on Scott’s actions as he seems to have forgotten his word on this issue."
