Winner and loser of the week in Florida politics
Winner of the week
Marco Rubio. The Republican U.S. senator set off last week on a book signing tour that drew big crowds at stops across Florida before he pushed on to other states, including South Carolina and Virginia. His stock may have dipped as a vice presidential running mate, but book sales appear strong (An American Son is No. 4 on the New York Times bestseller list for hardcover nonfiction) and Rubio has soaked up media buzz in key states.
Loser of the week
Bill Young. Okay, so the Pinellas congressman said he misunderstood a question about raising the minimum wage. And the guy following him with a video camera was a progressive activist. But Young's response — "get a job" — came across as insensitive in a tough economy and earned him a healthy dose of unflattering news coverage.
