Gov. Scott heads to Aspen for RGA summer meet

24

July

Gov. Rick Scott will be in Aspen, Colorado on Wednesday and Thursday attending the summer meeting of the Republican Governors Association.

Scott, a member of the group's executive committee that is chaired by his friend, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, is expected to use the gathering to discuss his favorite subject: jobs in Florida. Last summer, the RGA also held its summer sessions and a fund-raiser in the popular ski resort city, attended by eventual GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Republican governors control 30 of the 50 statehouses in America. Scott is the incumbent of the largest GOP-controlled state who's seeking re-election in 2014, now that Texas' Rick Perry has announced he will not seek another term.

The Republican Governors Association has played an important role in the past two races for governor of Florida. In 2010, the group underwrote an aggressive TV advertising campaign to drive up Democrat Alex Sink's negatives, in which it claimed to have spent nearly $10 million.

Four years earlier, the group helped then-Republican Charlie Crist get elected. Romney, then a leader of the group, personally paid a visit to Tallahassee and hand-delivered a $1 million check to the campaign of Crist, who served as host for an RGA meeting in Miami in 2008 where then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin largely stole the spotlight from other GOP governors. At that Miami gathering, the governors chose Mark Sanford of South Carolina as their chairman.
