House immigration leader to lead rally in Orlando
Rep. Luis V. Gutiérrez, D-IL, will headline an immigration reform rally on Monday in Orlando, as advocates seek to put pressure on House Republicans.
"He is choosing to visit locations where the local economy is heavily dependent on immigrant workers and where there are Republican members of Congress who should be among the first in line to support immigration reform," read a statement from the lawmaker's office.
Orlando area Reps. Dan Webster and John Mica have both indicated they do not support steps that critics call amensty, including providing a path to citizenship for people here illegally.
The event is being held at noon at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. Speakers include Angel Marcial, senior pastor of the Evangelical Coalition of Central Florida; Maria Luyanda, president of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce; Tirso Moreno, director of the Farmworker Association of Florida. Webster has been invited, organizers said.
Gutiérrez is a member of a bipartsian House group, which includes Florida Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, that has been trying for years to craft immigration legislation. The House GOP this week rejected the Senate's immigration bill and said it will do it step-by-step.
