In Citrus County, a strong show of support for Rubio
Citrus County Republicans voiced strong support for Marco Rubio's Senate bid during a meeting Monday night.
Local GOP Chairman Mike Moberley said there was a motion to support Rubio and a voice vote among the roughly 100 people in attendance was unanimous.
There was no mention of Carlos Beruff, Moberley acknowledged. Beruff has been trying to cast Rubio as having not paid attention to Florida as he chased higher ambitions.
"We don’t want to lose that seat to a Democrat and Marco has the best chance of getting re-elected," Moberley said in an interview.
Donald Trump blew out Rubio in the March 15 presidential primary, and Citrus County was no exception, with the New Yorker taking 55 percent of the vote to Rubio's 18 percent.
"Maybe they had their reservations and thought Trump was the best person," Moberley said. "They just liked Trump's message. (Rubio's) certainly qualified for Senate."
