In which George LeMieux attacks Charlie Crist and John Morgan calls LeMieux a homely skunk
Lord knows there are many valid criticisms and attacks on Charlie Crist, the newly announced Democratic candidate for governor.
But it's still jarring to hear the attacks come from George LeMieux, Crist's former political adviser, chief of staff, and appointed U.S. Senator. LeMieux today is a wealthy man almost entirely due to his association with Crist. What is the title "former U.S. Senator" worth? Several million dollars? Certainly more than the $10,000 a month former GOP Chairman Jim Greer used to pay him for nebulous consulting services.
"Charlie Crist has done something which in my mind is really breathtaking, not only in Florida but in the country...In my view this is the largest change of positions by a leading American political figure in as quick a period of time as we've had in recent political history," LeMieux said a few minutes ago in a conference call organized by the Florida GOP. "
"Anyone who wants to be in high political office has to have a guiding set of principles upon which they can make decisions and those principles are certainly in question here," said LeMieux, calling Crist "my friend."
What's really breathtaking is LeMieux attacking the man to whom he owes so much. And it prompted us to dig out a notebook from a recent conversation we had with John Morgan, Crist's boss, who told us that despite regular encouragment, Crist never says a negative word about LeMieux.
"LeMieux is a skunk," Morgan said. "If I look like George LeMieux and I have the personality of George LeMieux, and you make me a United States Senator, I never, ever am going to do anything against you for the rest of my life. I mean, even if I was going to lose the United State Senate primary, I'm going to say, 'Listen, if you want me to bad mouth Charlie Crist it's not going to happen because he made me a United States senator, and he's my friend.' "
"This guy could could not get elected dog catcher up in Sanford where I live," Morgan continued. "I mean George LeMieux? You talk about the accidental senator. I have no use for that guy."
