Legislature pushes to rename roadway after slain Tarpon Springs officer

April

The state of Florida is set to rename a stretch of Alternate U.S. 19 in Pinellas County in honor of a Tarpon Springs police officer killed in the line of duty in late 2014.

The Florida Senate unanimously voted Thursday to rename a stretch of the roadway from Tarpon Avenue to the Pasco County line the Officer Charles ‘Charlie K’ Kondek Jr. Memorial Highway. The House passed an identical bill on Wednesday.

In December 2014, Kondek, 45, was responding to a noise complaint when he was shot dead by a man with an extensive criminal history and did not want to go back to prison.

“I thought this would be a very good way to remember his service and his sacrifice,” State Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, said of the bill just before it passed.

Rep. Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, sponsored the bill in the House.
