Negron's redistricting joke cracks them up at 'Broward Days'
Now that the dust has finally settled from the Florida Senate's chaotic redistricting year of 2015, senators can laugh about the subject -- a little.
Sen. Joe Negron, R-Stuart, was the guest speaker Wednesday night at a reception for "Broward Days," the annual two-day excursion by county business and political leaders to the Capitol. The reception was hosted by Gunster, one of South Florida's oldest law firms, where Negron is a member and a partner is former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, who emceed the event.
Negron is known as a policy wonk, but he also has a quick wit, and there's only so much any audience in Tallahassee wants to hear about beach renourishment or tourist development taxes. As Negron introduced Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto, saying "She's from the Fort Myers area," Benacquisto piped up: "I grew up in Broward County!"
"With redistricting, you never know what county you're going to represent," Negron said to swells of laughter. "So I'd like to say hi to all my potential friends in Melbourne."
