Nelson: Zika funding isn't enough
Sen. Bill Nelson on Wednesday praised the Obama administration for freeing up $589 million to fight Zika but said it's not enough and called on Congress to act.
“Florida has more cases of Zika virus than any other state," Nelson said. "The administration announced today that it will redirect more than $500 million to help curb the spread of the virus, but more must be done. Congress needs to pass the president’s request for an additional $1.9 billion to stop this virus before it’s too late.”
The additional funding request has been held up in the GOP-controlled Congress. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, issued a news release praising the Obama move but he thinks Congress should wait on more funding. "The congressman believes the first action should be to use money already available, and if that’s insufficient then we should explore additional funding," a spokeswoman said.
