Ros-Lehtinen, Diaz-Balart join rally for immigration reform
Florida Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart showed up at a sprawling immigration reform rally today on the National Mall, adding their voices to an effort to breath life into the issue.
"Let's be clear, this is not the first rally we've been to over the years. We've heard a lot of lip service and a lot of promises. Both political parties have had a chance to solve it. Neither have. It's about time we get it done this year," a fired-up Diaz-Balart said.
Ros-Lehtinen opened her remarks by noting that the mall was open for the rally. "Let's open up our parks for everyone to enjoy," she said, referring to the government shutdown.
Immigration has stumbled in the House and activists have grown concerned and restless, staging protests across the country. To catch the attention of the news media, eight Democratic House members were among those who were arrested today after blocking a street near the Capitol. The Republicans from Florida did not participate in the civil disobedience.
