Rubio attends Koch brother gathering in California
Sen. Marco Rubio mingled with the influential Koch brothers during a retreat in California on Monday.
The gathering at St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort, near Laguna Beach, attracted top GOP donors and marked the kick-off of the latest Koch political initiative: A new super PAC, Freedom Partners Action Fund, that plans to influence the midterm elections.
The Daily Beast reported that libertarian political scientist Charles Murray was also scheduled to address the gathering. The Nation adds: "Senator Rubio was to hold a small group discussion on an unnamed topic that afternoon and headline what was called internally “The Immigrant Experience” dinner, closing out the conference."
The new PAC (Politico has more detail here) is part of a broader plan to spent $290 million on elections. The Daily Beast cast the effort as an “apparent response” to billionaire Tom Steyer’s plan to spend $100 million to go after climate change skeptics, including Gov. Rick Scott.
