Safety Harbor Mayor Ayoub ponders running for Congress
Add another name to the list of people considering whether to run for Pinellas County's open congressional seat: Safety Harbor Mayor Joseph Ayoub.
That's considering, as in not decided yet.
Ayoub said in a news release many people have encouraged him to run and "They are excited about a true conservative Republican potentially getting in, running and winning."
Ayoub is a lifelong Pinellas County resident and a CPA.
The seat is open because of the death last month of longtime U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young. Special elections have been scheduled to pick a replacement, with a primary on Jan. 14 and a general election March 11. The district is entirely contained within Pinellas County.
Young's former general counsel David Jolly plans to run for the Republican nomination. Other potential GOP candidates include former Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard, Pinellas Commissioner Karen Seel, former Pinellas Commissioner Neil Brickfield, Young's brother Tom and Pinellas Sheriff Robert Gualtieri.
On the Democratic side, former Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink is running against St. Petersburg lawyer Jessica Ehrlich.
