Gov. Scott names Tampa DCF veteran Mike Carroll to run agency
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is naming a new interim secretary for the state's embattled child welfare agency, The Associated Press reports.
Scott on Monday plans to announce in Jacksonville that Mike Carroll has been appointed to take over the Department of Children and Families. Scott will make the announcement during a visit with child protective investigators in Jacksonville. Carroll will succeed interim secretary Esther Jacobo, who has been in charge ince last July's abrupt resignation of David Wilkins. Her last day is Friday.
Carroll's appointment is subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate. He has been regional managing director for the Suncoast region, which includes the Tampa Bay area and southwest Florida. Carroll has been with the department for more than two decades. DCF has come under fire for the number of children who have died despite warnings to the agency.
