Senate passes residency standards for candidates, officials

Prodded by media reports of some legislators living outside their districts, the Senate on Friday unanimously approved a bill that sets residency requirements for political candidates and officials statewide.

The News Service of Florida reports that the bill (SB 602), sponsored by Senate Ethics & Elections Chairman Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, applies to state and local officials and candidates for office. The bill details factors that must be used to determine residency, such as the address where a homestead exemption is claimed and records of utility payments.
