Senate won't confirm all Rick Scott appointees
Senators approved a slew of Gov. Rick Scott appointees on Thursday and are slated to do more today. However, a few notable names will not make the cut.
Unconfirmed appointments include state Surgeon General Dr. John Armstrong, Florida A&M trustee (and former Pinellas County school board member) Glenn Gilzean, and the entire Florida Polytechnic University Board of Trustees.
The senator in charge of appointments, Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, said they will have to wait until next year.
Armstrong fell out of favor with senators when he failed to show up for a conformation hearing, Latvala said. "There were some issues with some members of the Legislature and the way he interacted with them. It's a little behavior management," he said.
The unconfirmed university trustees can continue serving an additional year, as long as Scott reappoints them. Latvala said Gilzean was not confirmed because his March 14 appointment came as session was already underway.
"The Poly appointments...we just paused on those," he said.
Why the pause?
"I think there was some question at the beginning part of session exactly what was going to happen there," he said. "There was a lot of different theories flying around, were we going to continue as an independent university or was it going to be under someone else's stewardship, so they just sort of got a late start."
The Polytechnic board members are Chairman Robert Gidel, Mark Bostick, William Brown, Joseph Caruncho, Sandra Featherman, Richard Hallion, Scott Hammack, Kevin Hyman, Frank Martin, Robert Stork, and Donald Wilson. (h/t on Poly delays to Lakeland Ledger)
Next year, if the appointees are not confirmed, they can no longer serve, Latvala said. Citizens Property Insurance Corp. President and CEO Barry Gilway hasn't been confirmed yet, but Latvala says he will be included in another batch of appointments before session ends Friday.
