So how much is Beruff worth really?
Carlos Beruff has built a real estate empire that has as much as $218 million in assets that is at the heart of his ability to spent up to $15 million of his own money in his primary against U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.
Beruff filed a required financial disclosure report that shows Beruff and his wife have a stake in 43 business entities and 36 land holdings. Those assets, combined with other investments, give him assets worth between $55 million and $218 million.
He also reports loans and other liabilities ranging from $13 million to $57 million.
Financial disclosure reports used by Congress have notoriously wide ranges of reporting, making it hard to pin down a candidate's true net worth. For instance Beruff's flagship company - Medallion Homes Gulf Coast, Inc, - is listed as being valued between $5 million and $25 million. He reported receiving $144,371 in income from Medallion in 2015. He also reported that his other assets generated between $4.8 million and $27.4 million for him and his wife in 2015.
Beruff's net worth could be as much as $205 million basked on those reports.
Rubio, who filed his financial disclosure report in May, reported having assets between $137,000 and $405,000. His liabilities range from $500,000 to $1 million, his report showed.
Beruff last week said he has already spent between $7.5 million and $8 million on his campaign, mostly on television ads, and intends to spend as much as $15 million on his primary against Rubio.
