Ted Cruz calls Rubio's immigration pushback 'Laughingly on its face false'
Ted Cruz continued his offensive against Marco Rubio and immigration on Friday, escalating a fight that has the two 44-year-old Hispanic senators fighting over who was more squishy on the issue.
“From day one I led the fight against the Gang of 8 amnesty bill, stood shoulder to shoulder with Jeff Sessions … and we defeated it,” Cruz said on the Mike Gallagher Show.
Rubio’s team aggressively sought to counter Cruz on Thursday and the candidate in South Carolina said Cruz is “a supporter of legalizing people that are in this country illegally,” effectively saying he and the Texan are no different.
“I laughed out loud at that,” Cruz said Friday. “That statement was truly stunning. That’s like Obama saying my position is the same as his on Obamacare. ... It is laughingly, blazingly, on its face false.”
Here’s more from Rubio on Thursday:
“When the Senate bill was proposed, he proposed legalizing people that were here illegally. He proposed giving them work permits," Rubio said. "He's also supported a massive expansion of the green cards. He's supported a massive expansion of the H-1B program - a 500% increase. So, if you look at it, I don't think our positions are dramatically different."
Rubio and Cruz are in Orlando to speak at the Sunshine Summit. Cruz also has an afternoon rally planned and tea party groups in Florida planned to bus people in.
