U.S. Senate candidates veer away from election talk

As Hurricane Matthew continues to pound Florida's east coast, both U.S. Senate candidates are staying away from talking about the November election and focusing on the storm.

On Fox News Channel just moments ago, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio was asked about the polls showing he is locked in a close race. Rubio mostly passed on answering the question, saying over the next few days he's focused on "making sure Florida gets through this."

"When the time is right here over the next few days and Florida begins to recover, then we do have an important election," Rubio said. "It’ll be a close race. We always knew it would be. It’s what we anticipated and it's what we prepared for."

U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Palm Beach County Democrat, has similarly canceled all campaigning during the storm and is back in his Congressional District meeting with emergency operations officials and providing information to people in his district about where to go for help.
