Winner and loser of the week in Florida politics
Winner of the week
Carlos Beruff. The Manatee County businessman spent more than $8 million of his own money to get trounced by Marco Rubio in the Republican U.S. Senate primary. He would be prime contender for loser of the week, except he made a darn good point after his loss Tuesday: “Critics will say it was a fool’s errand to stay in the Senate race,” Beruff said. “They will say we had no chance of beating Rubio, and they will say I wasted money. But of course, critics are most often those people who lack the courage and commitment to enter the arena.”
Winner of the week 2
Gwen Graham. The outgoing congresswoman from Tallahassee and likely Democratic candidate for governor in 2018 has been collecting chits and meeting prospective supporters all over Florida while campaigning for Hillary Clinton and other Democrats lately. Her best known likely rivals, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, meanwhile have been tied up with their day jobs and matters like Zika and Hermine.
