Winner and loser of the week in Florida politics
Winner of the week
Carlos Beruff. Gov. Rick Scott named the wealthy Bradenton builder and unsuccessful 2016 U.S. Senate candidate chairman of the state’s Constitution Revision Commission. In that role Beruff could have far more influence over Florida’s future than had he defeated Marco Rubio for the U.S. Senate nomination last year, and his appointment was a clear snub of Rubio by the governor likely to run for U.S. Senate himself in 2018.
Loser of the week
Andrew Gillum. The Tallahassee mayor’s jump into the 2018 governor’s race looked like amateur hour. Mr. “Rising Star” immediately had to apologize after a Republican activist exposed him for spending public money on a campaign email system, and faced allegations that he violated campaign finance laws by creating a campaign video before he had a campaign. What’s that old expression? Oh yeah: Not ready for prime time.
