Winners and loser of the week in Fla politics
Winners of the week
State Rep. Dave Kerner. The NRA rarely loses in the Florida Legislature, and Democratic House members rarely block the will of Republicans on the NRA's side. But Kerner, a Lake Worth Democrat, managed to shut down an NRA-backed "stand your ground" bill making it harder to prosecute people who claim they used a firearm in self-defense. Scott Arceneaux. The Florida Democratic Party's executive director, on leave from the state party to help the Democratic Governornors Association in his native Louisiana, helped John Bel Edwards beat David Vitter in Louisiana's governor's race Saturday, a big, and rare, Democratic win in the deep south. Never mind that he had to travel 400 miles to help win a governor's race.
Loser of the week
Ben Carson. For a Mr. Pure candidate holding himself up as a non-politician, Carson's weak attempt to walk back his comments a week ago about political intervention in the Terri Schiavo case sure made him look like just another pandering pol. Between that, his "rabid dog" comparison to Syrian refugees, and a top foreign policy adviser telling the New York Times that Carson is struggling to get up to speed on foreign policy, this week raised serious questions about Carson's readiness for prime time. Carson did earn a priceless SNL tribute. See here
