Would you spend $400,000 for a $30,000 a year job?
The numbers are still being tallied, but it is clear that at least four candidate running for seats in the Florida House spent more than $400,000 each on winning positions that will pay them about $30,000 each.
Final reports are not in yet, but what numbers are in show that the biggest spender for one of 120 Florida House seats was Loranne Ausley, a Tallahassee Democrat, who spent almost $458,000 through her campaign account to win the seat. Ausley previously served in the Florida House from 2000 to 2008.
The top spending Republican actually lost his campaign. In Miami, Republican John Couriel spent $438,515 from his campaign account but lost to Democrat Daisy Baez, who spent a relatively economical $274,113 from her campaign account.
To be sure, what the campaigns spend on their campaign efforts is only a part of the story. Not included is the spending from outside groups and political parties that did not go directly through the campaigns.
