Yoho: Furloughed workers should not get back pay

During a teletown hall Thursday evening hosted by Rep. Ted Yoho, a caller named Frank from Gainesville asked about furloughed workers.

"The people that had to work should be paid," Frank said. "But the people that are home watching Netflix and whatever, I'm not sure that we should be sending them checks."

Replied Yoho: "Well, when we voted on that they were supposed to come back to work as part of that deal. ... I agree 100 percent with you. If they're not working, they shouldn't get paid."

Yoho, a tea party Republican from Gainesville, was referring to a bill the House approved on Saturday -- 407-0 -- to provide retroactive pay to all federal workers. Senate Democrats agree in concept but oppose the piecemeal budget funding approach of the House.

During the call, Yoho repeatedly defended his statements that failing to raise the debt limit would not be a catastrophe, and blamed the liberal media for saying otherwise. The media, he said, likes to make fun of him. "It's just an uphill battle we have to fight. Good thing a lot of us are Christians."

He also said he's working on legislation to "get rid of" the Department of Education.

This may best explain why Yoho feels he's right on the shutdown: Callers were asked if the shutdown should continue to prevent Obamacare from being funded. Seventy-one percent said yes.
