An arrogant umpire
I'm not big on jumping on umpires, but umpire Scott Barry displayed the type of arrogance and incompetence Tuesday night that deserves criticism. In case you didn't see it, Barry ejected Phillies slugger Ryan Howard in the 14th inning of the Phillies' 4-2, 16-inning loss the Astros. Barry was umpiring third base. On two consecutive pitches, Howard appeared to have check his swing, but Barry, on appeal, said Howard swung at both pitches. You could see after the first strike that Barry was irritated with Howard's reaction. Then he wasted no time throwing Howard out after the second called strike. Making it even worse, Howard's ejection left the Phillies without any more position players, meaning pitcher Roy Oswalt had to go into the game.
