Boise State's win is bad news for college football

boise.America loves an underdog, which is why most people were rooting for little Boise State to beat Virginia Tech Monday night. Boise State, ranked third in the nation, beat the No. 10 Hokies, 33-30. Score one for the little guy. But last night's loser? All you fans of Florida, Alabama, Ohio State and most of the rest of college football. All of you cheering on Boise State now must face the very real possibility that Monday night's victory probably paved the way for Boise State to play in the BCS national title game.

Momentum has been building for years to let the little schools have a chance at a national title and Boise State has become the poster child and media darling for that, as shown by the Broncos' No. 3 ranking to start the season. After knocking off Virginia Tech on Monday, Boise can now say, "See, told you we can play with the big boys.'' Problem is, it's the only big boy they'll play the rest of the regular season. Boise State has one semi-tough game left on the schedule: at home against Oregon State, which lost to another little guy Saturday -- TCU. Other than that, Boise State's schedule appears easy: Wyoming, New Mexico State, Toledo, San Jose State, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, Idaho, Fresno State, Nevada and Utah State. If they run the table (and they should), the Broncos will shout about they belong in the national title game.

Meantime, teams such as Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas and so forth all eventually will head into conference schedules where there are landmines waiting almost every week. Beating one really good team such as Virginia Tech and then coasting the rest of the season is not like trying to navigate a real conference schedule such as the SEC or Big Ten. It's one thing to get up for one big game such as Virginia Tech, but it's another to get up for a dicey conference game pretty much every week. Boise can have a bad day and still crush a Louisiana Tech or Idaho. If you have a bad day in the SEC or Big Ten or ACC or Big 12, it doesn't matter who your opponent is, you are in trouble.

For years, it has been said that the BCS is unfair to a little school like Boise State. But what appears unfair is Boise State could go undefeated playing a creampuff schedule and being rewarded with a shot at the national title.
