Crawford to Red Sox is Tampa Bay's nightmare

December

crawford. It was bad enough when we all thought Rays leffielder Carl Crawford was leaving to join the Angels or Tigers. But now that he has gone to Red Sox, it's one of the Rays worst nightmares. The player who helped lead the Rays from a laughingstock to a contender is now a member of the Rays most hated rival: the Red Sox. One can hardly blame Crawford. It's hard to turn away from a seven-year, $142-million deal. You can't blame the Rays because that's simply more than they can afford. And you certainly can't blame the Red Sox for scooping up, perhaps, the best free agent on the market. Not only does it improve the Red Sox tremendously, but it keeps Crawford from the Yankees, too. (Not to mention that it removes one of the best players from the team that actually won the AL East last season, the Rays.) But the whole thing just smells, doesn't it? The rich get richer and the poor finish 30 games out in the American League East. Even more depressing for Rays fans is the belief that now that the Red Sox have upped the stakes by signing Crawford and trading for Adrian Gonzalez, the Yankees will overspend if necessary to make sure they sign free-agent pitcher Cliff Lee.

Here's some of the reaction from around the country.
