Good and bad news, FSU fans



599524.JPGFirst, the good news, Seminoles fans.

The 1994 Florida State-Nebraska game ranks 17th on's list of the 50 Most Painful Outcomes in College Football History.

What's good about that, you ask?

The Seminoles won, 18-16.

Scott Bentley's field goal with 21 seconds remaining gave FSU a two-point lead. Nebraska missed a 45-yard attempt on the final play, and the 'Noles claimed their first national championship.

Now, the bad news.

The 1991 Florida State-Miami game ranks 13th.

The Seminoles, ranked No. 1 all season, led 16-7 in the fourth quarter before the Hurricanes moved ahead with three minutes left. Florida State wasn't done, driving to the Miami 17 in the final minute before Gerry Thomas' 34-yard field goal attempt missed wide right.

The 17-16 loss has been known as Wide Right I ever since.
