June

Card Happy birthday to former major-leaguer Ron LeFlore, born on this date 62 years ago in Detroit. After a childhood that included shooting herion and armed robbery, LeFlore was sentenced to state prison and began playing organized ball for the first time his life. It was there where he was discovered by then-Tigers manager Billy Martin. Eventually, LeFlore became a 26-year-old rookie and was a starter for the Tigers in 1975. A year later, he was an all-star and led the American League in steals in 1978 with 68. Considering his background and limited baseball experience, LeFlore had an impressive major-league career, playing nine seasons with the Tigers, Expos and White Sox. In 1,099 games, LeFlore batted .288 with 57 triples, 59 homers, 353 RBIs and 455 stolen bases. LeFlore's story was made famous in 1978 with a CBS made-for-TV movie called One in a Million: The Ron LeFlore Story with Roots star LeVar Burton playing LeFlore and Billy Martin played by ... Billy Martin.
