Herschel Walker says he could still play in the NFL

walker.Herschel Walker turns 49 in March and hasn't played in the NFL in 13 years, but he still thinks he can suit up. These days, Walker is an MMA fighter, but sounds like he still wants to play in the NFL.

"If I continue to stay in the shape I'm in now, I know I can play when I'm 50," Walker said during a teleconference to promote an upcoming MMA event. "Right now, if you asked me if I can play today, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind I can play football, that I can help a team out.  I can 100 percent guarantee you I can help a football team out ...

"I think I'm a better conditioned athlete right now than I was when I was playing. I'm 48 now, and I'm in better shape now than I was in my early 20s playing football."

Walker's famous physique is as chiseled as ever. He weighs 217 pounds, which is a little lighter than his NFL playing weight. He claims he ran a 4.39 40-yard dash a year ago and could easily run a 4.5.

“I don’t know if I could play every snap, but there’s no doubt in my mind that I could help a team right now,” Walker said.

Walker won the 1982 Heisman Trophy at Georgia then went onto a 15-year professional football career. He spent three seasons in the old United States Football League and then played 12 NFL seasons with the Cowboys, Vikings, Eagles and Giants. He led the USFL in rushing twice and finished his NFL career with 18,168 all-purpose yards, eighth on the all-time list.

Where would Walker choose to play if he ever made a comeback?

"I'd say either Minnesota or Atlanta,'' Walker said. "Probably Atlanta the most, since it's home for me. Being a Georgia boy, and all. It's just home for me."
