Hope this '83 pick works better than the last

Yzerman New Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman was the fourth pick in 1983 draft. Know who the first pick was in the 1983 draft? Brian Lawton, the former Lightning general manager. Yzerman turned out to be the better player, Now let's see if he can be the better GM, although the bar set by Lawton is not very high. Looking back, the 1983 draft was a pretty good one. After Lawton went first overall to the North Stars, the Hartford Whalers selected Sylvain Turgeon, who had a decent NHL career. Then came two heavyweights -- Pat LaFontaine to the Islanders and Yzerman to the Red Wings. Others taken in the first round that year were goalie Tom Barrasso, forwards Cam Neely, Russ Courtnall, John MacLean and Dave Gagner. Then, later rounds included Claude Lemieux (second round), Bob Probert, Brian Bradley and Marc Bergevin (third round), Darren Puppa (fourth round), Petr Klima (fifth round), Rick Tocchet (sixth round) and Dominik Hasek (10th round)
