The Johnny Damon saga
While we all wait to see if Johnny Damon is going to return to the Red Sox, the prevailing thought is the only reason why the Red Sox claimed the Tigers' DH on waivers was to keep the Rays from putting a claim in for him. Here's an interesting comment from New York Daily News baseball columnist John Harper:
The funny part is the Red Sox may have done the Yankees a favor by keeping him from the Rays, the team with the most obvious need for Damon as a DH, a clutch lefthanded bat, and the presence to help a young team win a championship.
Indeed, for all of their young talent, there are days when the Rays look like they badly need more pop if they are going to beat the Yankees in October. And Damon would have been a perfect fit for them.
