More shots at Tampa Bay

Yzerman Yeesh, if it wasn't bad enough that baseball columnists in New York and Chicago are taking shots at Rays fans for not showing up at Tropicana Field, now hockey columnists in Canada are taking shots at the Lightning. (Granted, it easier than fishing with dynamite.) The Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson is one of the most respected hockey writers in the biz who has been recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame. And, just fyi, he's an even better person than he is a hockey writer. Anyway, the writer known as "Matty'' doesn't see Steve Yzerman coming to Tampa Bay to be the Lightning's next general manager. Matheson writes:

Detroit Red Wings executive Steve Yzerman is the hottest item on the free-agent market, but if he takes the Tampa Bay Lightning general manager job, I'll be more shocked than Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis after his club went up in flames to the Montreal Canadiens in Round 1. Stevie Y can pick and choose his first GM job and he's not being set up to fail. So it's not going to be with the bottom-feeding Lightning, who don't have a deep group of prospects.

Ouch. Hard to argue with Matheson, but if I'm the Lightning, I'm not even sure Yzerman is the best choice anyway. He has no GM experience other than putting together Canada's Olympic hockey team and, given his choices, it was almost impossible to put together a bad Canadian Olympic team. (And speaking of that team, where was Marty St. Louis and Steven Stamkos?) Just because Stevie Y was a great hockey player doesn't mean he would make a great general manager.
