The next Tampa Bay Rays?
Of course, the big news around these parts today is the Rays' season opener and I guess we should get around to mentioning that they do have an opponent -- the Baltimore Orioles. (Plus, I needed an excuse to run a photo of Boog Powell.) One of the best franchises in baseball from, oh, the mid 1960s to the mid 1980s is the midst of a major slump. The Orioles have had 12 consecutive losing seasons and haven't won championship since they won the 1983 World Series when Cal Ripken was 23 years old. But there's optimism in Baltimore that the Orioles are on the way back from the abyss. Here's the story from today's Baltimore Sun. Unfortunately, just like the Rays, the O's are still in the American League East with the Yankees and Red Sox. No one is looking for a worst-to-first jump like the Rays had in 2008, but Baltimore is starting to collect some nice young talent and a run up to .500 is possible.
